Dewees and Napier Smash SoHo
March 19, 2022- Bristol, TN–The 2022 Morristown Marine Team Trail made stop number 2 Saturday with 254 registered boats on South Holston Lake. Of the 254 registrants, we had 218 boats actually in the water that went through blast-off. The weather was great, with the exception of a WSW wind that increased as the day went on until it was full gale force by weigh-in. Air temperatures were nearing 70 degrees, with occasional cloud cover, and if not for the wind, would have been near perfect conditions for this clear mountain lake. Coming off a heavy mid-week rain system, the water had some stain to it and was a steady 52-54 degrees. The fishing changed drastically through the week with reports of a great shallow crankbait bite early in the week and most of our anglers reporting better success deeper in the water column on tournament day. 69 teams weighed a 5-fish limit and 132 teams weighed at least one fish. A grand total of 1,381.55 lbs of fish hit our scales yesterday. 497 total fish weighed in with 496 alive and released back into the lake.
The team of Perry Dewees and Paul Napier came out on top with a great mixed bag of brown and green fish weighing 20.21 lbs. Perry and Paul said they stayed mid-lake all day and fished deeper than they had been practicing this week. They found a pattern early and it played out in their favor throughout the day. Check out the FaceBook Live interview with them on our FaceBook page where they gave us a few more details of their day. Perry and Paul’s win netted them a grand total of $13,250.00. This included 1st place, Highest Finishing Skeeter, and 1st Humminbird/MinnKota Payout. Congratulations to Perry and Paul on a great day on the water.
Second place went to the team of Casey Majni and Corey Brooks with 19.70 lbs, just .51 lbs back! They weighed fish for both Citizens Bank Big Largemouth and Citizens Bank Big Smallmouth, but both were just hundredths of a pound shy. Their largemouth went 4.55 lbs and their smallmouth was 4.79 lbs. Casey and Corey’s bag won them a total of $7,650.00 for their day of fishing. This included 2nd place, 2nd Highest Finishing Skeeter, 1st Morristown Marine New Money, and 2nd Humminbird/MinnKota Payout. Congrats on another great finish in 2022!
3rd Place went to Seth Keen and Gavin Clautier with a weight of 19.63, again just ounces out of 2nd! Seth and Gavin took home a total of $3,000.00 for their day of fishing! Congrats and thanks for coming out to fish with us!

A big thanks to Observation Knob/Sullivan County Park and Park Manager, Chris Ihrke for allowing us to use their facilities to host our tournament. A HUGE thank you to the Carson-Newman Fishing Team for making the trip to Bristol to help with parking all those trucks and trailers at Ob Knob. You guys are awesome and it’s a privilege to work with you guys. Thank you to the volunteer fire fighters at Holston Valley/421 Volunteer Fire Department for coming out to fill up the tanks at weigh in. Our trail, the anglers and the fish caught appreciate your efforts to ensure the livelihood of the fish we weighed.
We would also like to thank our entire tournament trail staff for their long hours and hard work to bring this whole thing together. Most importantly, we want to thank the anglers for coming out to fish with us, being great sportsmen and stewards of the sport of bass fishing.
We compiled some statistics from this tournament we wanted to share that prove our anglers and tournament staff are truly some of the best in the nation. We had 254 registered boats, with 218 in the water at blast off. Thanks to the system we have in place and the knowledge and experience of our anglers, all 218 boats were safely blasted off in a total of 48 minutes. That’s an average of 4.5 boats per minute. The quicker and smoother we can make blast off, the faster you guys can get your fishing day started. So, a BIG Thank You to all of our staff and anglers for accomplishing this huge feat! Secondly, we weighed in 132 bags of fish across 5 flights in a total of 110 minutes (1 hour, 50 minutes) from scales-open to scales-closed. That equates to an average of 1.2 bags weighed per minute! Again, that’s a HUGE credit to our staff AND the anglers bringing fish up to the scales. The faster we can get your fish weighed, the sooner you can get home to your families. Thank you, to everyone involved for making this process so smooth and fast.
Next up: Norris Lake out of Lonas Young Park (White Bridge) on April 2, 2022. We will be taking registrations starting Monday, March 28 at Morristown Marine and we will be set up taking registrations in person at Lonas YoungPark in LaFollette on Friday, April 1 from 11am-4pm. We look forward to seeing everyone then!
